The Parliament of Tanzania passes the bill of the spouses of the country's top leaders to start receiving retirement benefits

The Parliament has passed the bill for the amendment of various laws number 4 of the year 2023 where one of the amendments in the law on Retirement Benefits in Political Service is proposed Spouse (Wife/Husband) of former Presidents, spouse of former Vice Presidents and spouse of former Prime Ministers should be paid retirement benefits for the period of leadership of their colleagues.
Presenting the amendment today, October 31, 2023, during the Parliament session in Dodoma, the Attorney General, Judge Dr.  Eliezer Feleshi has said that new articles 9A, 12A and 14A are proposed to be added in the Law on Retirement Benefits in Political Service, Chapter 225.

In line with the amendment, articles 11, 13 and 15 are proposed to be amended to establish a procedure for the payment of benefits to the Companions of the President, Vice President and Prime Minister in the event that they die while in office or after completing their term and die before being paid their benefits.

According to the Attorney General, Article 18 is proposed to be amended to set the procedure for the spouse of a former Parliament Speaker who has died to receive monthly pension benefits.

The approved bill will be submitted to the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr.  Samia Suluhu Hassan so that she can look at the bill and if she approves, she will sign it so that it becomes law.

It should be noted that one year ago (2022), Salma Kikwete the elected Member of Parliament for Mchinga constituency and also the wife of the forner president of Tanzania Mrisho Kikwete presented this bill in Parliament, where also since 2017 she has been serving as a member of Parliament.
