MTUMBA: A LEGACY THAT WILL LIVE FOREVER

he inauguration of Mtumba Government City in Dodoma marks a defining milestone in Tanzania’s national development. Inside Tanzania Magazine commends the Government, under President Samia Suluhu Hassan, for advancing this historic undertaking, transforming a long-held national aspiration into a lasting symbol of progress and continuity.

This achievement traces its roots to the vision of the Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, who declared Dodoma Tanzania’s capital in 1973. Decades later, the late President John Pombe Magufuli accelerated the relocation of government operations, culminating in the inauguration of Government City’s first phase in April 2019.

President Samia has carried this legacy forward, overseeing the continued development of permanent ministry offices and essential infrastructure. Her Government’s commitment demonstrates the importance of sustained leadership, national planning and continuity in implementing projects whose significance extends beyond individual administrations.

Mtumba is more than an assembly of buildings, offices and roads. It represents Tanzania’s determination to establish a modern administrative capital, strengthen government coordination and create an environment conducive to efficient public service delivery.
