The Minister for Energy, Dr Juma Zuberi Homera, has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to working with international companies involved in the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project in the Lindi Region.
He assured the companies that the Government would continue to work closely with them to ensure the implementation of the strategic project, which is expected to benefit the national economy and improve the well-being of Tanzanians. The project is valued at US$42 billion, equivalent to approximately TSh113.4 trillion.
“The Government continues to make efforts to ensure that the project gets underway, as it is one of the key initiatives expected to contribute to adequate energy supplies in the country and support the objectives of the National Development Vision 2050. Our goal is to see the project implemented,” Dr Homera said.
He said the Government recognised the project’s importance to national development, particularly in promoting industrial growth, creating jobs, increasing national income and improving social services for communities living around the project area.
Dr Homera made the remarks on 22 October 2026, following a meeting with Menno Bax, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Shell, and Hilde Merete Nafstad, Vice-President of Equinor Tanzania.
The LNG project, which is planned for the Lindi Region, involves international energy companies Shell and Equinor, alongside ExxonMobil, Pavilion Energy and MedcoEnergi. The companies are working in partnership with the Government through the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC). The total investment is estimated at US$42 billion.
Dr Homera also urged the project partners to ensure that local communities were involved at various stages of its implementation so that they could benefit from social development projects in areas surrounding the site.
Representatives of Shell and Equinor said their companies would continue to work with the Government through the various stages of preparation and implementation.
They added that the project would bring significant benefits to Tanzania and the companies participating in the investment.
Separately, Dr Homera commended the construction of Likong’o Primary School in Likong’o Village, Lindi Region. The school was built through a partnership involving Shell, Equinor and the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) in the area where the LNG project is expected to be implemented.
